Home Gym Dumbbells

Dumbbells are basic equipment for any home gym. They allow for a wide variety of exercises targeting almost every major muscle group. They can be used for upper body workouts, lower body workouts, or core workouts. They are for the most pert low-tech and reasonable cost. Moreover, you can begin out with a small set if you are just starting out, and add to your home gym equipment collection over time.

There are four basic classifications of dumbbells, each having their place in your workout routine.

Small Dumbbell sets – typically sold in sets of three or four pairs. Typical weights are 2 lbs, 3 lbs, 5 lbs, 8 lbs. They often come vinyl coated for comfort. You can easily find a set of three pair for around $30.

Hexagon solid dumbbell weights – These are often heavier weights, typically do not come in sets, but are typically sold in pairs. I find it helpful to keep a selection of these in my home gym. They make the workouts convenient. I have added to the collection over time and now includes 12 lbs, 15 lbs, 20 lbs, 25 lbs, 30 lbs. For anything over that, I use the short adjustable dumbbell bars.

Adjustable dumbbell sets – These are the typical old school style. They consist of a short bar, with solid weight plates and collars. They often come in sets with some nice features such as vinyl grips and fast collars. I have two sets as part of my home gym equipment. One 30-pound set and one 40-pound set. York Barbell makes both. A 40-pound set typically costs about $60.

Selectable Dumbbell systems – These are the modern reincarnation of dumbbells that you have probably seen advertised on TV. Examples are the Bowflex SelectTech Dumbbells or Weider Tech PowerSwitch. If cost is not a problem for you, these systems provide convenience and flexibility. But they can cost upwards of $300, so I wouldn't recommend them but for the most dedicated.

I prefer a mix of the Hexagon solid dumbbells and the adjustable sets. Dumbbells work well with other simple home gym equipment such as a small workout bench and and exercise ball.

As for versatility, here is a short sample list of exercises you can perform with a set of dumbbells. The actual list is only limited by your imagination. The point is that you can get a full body workout using just dumbbells.

Upper Body – bench press, incline bench press, shoulder press, curls, flyes, side deltoid raises, bent over rows.

Lower Body – Lunges, squats, dead lifts, calf raises.

Dumbbells can also be used for weighted decline crunches.

Dumbbells are a basic and worthwhile investment for your home gym workouts.
